Do you need a Satellite Phone?
I often find when I am out on a shoot in the desert, the mountains, or other isolated areas my cell phone coverage is little to non existent. So it has made me think about a Satellite Phone. I think it is still a little outside my price range but I think it might make sense for some of you. As the name implies you make a phone call via a satellite. As long as you are in the line of sight of at least one satellite the phone works. You will never have to worry about international calls, roaming, or loss of cell coverage.
Just like cell towers hundreds of Satellites are positioned around the world just outside our earth’s atmosphere pointing down with coverage. Some of these Satellite phones offer data upload from anywhere in the world. So when news photographers are out on assignment and they need to make a story deadline, no need to find an internet café just use the Sat phone.
Satellite phone plans work similar to normal cell plans. You can buy or rent the phones which are about $500 plus a monthly service fee. On one website Globalstar you can get 500 minutes per month for only $120 a month.
If you are frequently out of cell coverage then a Satellite phone might be your best option to stay in touch with the world you left behind.
