North American Nature Photography Association honors photogrpahers at annual summit

North Amercian nature photographer Patricio Robles Gil will recieve the 2006 Outstanding photographer of the Year Award.

The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Wheat Ridge, Colo., USA, is bestowing its highest honor to Patricio Robles Gil, world-renowned nature photographer, in naming him the 2006 NANPA Outstanding Photographer of the Year. The award will be presented at NANPA's 12th Annual Summit, to be held Feb. 9-12, 2006, in Denver, Colorado. Robles Gil will be the Annual Awards Banquet speaker.

Robles Gil founded Agrupación Sierra Madre in 1989, through which he has published numerous books that illuminate the beauty and fragility of Mexico's ecosystems. In 1993, he founded Unidos para la Conservación (United for Conservation) to carry out specific actions for the protection of wildlife and natural areas. Robles Gil joins the ranks of other NANPA Outstanding Photographers of the Year, including Tui De Roy, Norbert Wu, Gary Braasch, Michael Nichols, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Tom Mangelsen, Frans Lanting, Art Wolfe and John Shaw.

Other high honors being presented at the 2006 Annual Summit include two Lifetime Achievement Awards. One will be given to Pat O'Hara, an environmental and fine art photographer whose color photography has been showcased in 17 books. The second 2006 recipient is Les Line who was editor-in-chief at Audubon for 25 years before leaving in 1991. Since then he has been working as a freelance science writer and editor for National Wildlife, The New York Times and other publications, including Audubon. He has written, edited or photographed more than 30 books, including the classic "Audubon Society Book of Wild Birds" and "Speaking for Nature," the Audubon Society's 100th anniversary book. Both Line and O'Hara will be speaking during the Annual Awards Banquet.

NANPA Fellows honors, given to individuals who have contributed at least 20 years to the industry, will be going to Boyd Norton, Bonnie Stutski and Tom Till. Other honors include: Ray Pfortner, NANPA Recognition Award; Kevin Fitz Patrick, NANPA Outstanding Service Award; and LightHawk, NANPA Community Service Award. All awards will be given at the Annual Summit.

The 2006 NANPA Annual Summit program will feature keynote addresses from Jack Dykinga, John Fielder, Wendy Shattil and Bob Rozinski, Daniel Cox, and Tim Gallagher and Bobby Ray Harrison. Field trips will explore the photographic opportunities of Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods, Roxborough State Park and more. Professionals and amateurs alike will find workshops and networking experiences tailored to their individual needs. In addition to the field trips, workshops, portfolio reviews, lectures and other events, this year will include a special outreach event sponsored by the Environment Committee.
