National Magazine Photography Awards.
What do Time Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and Martha Stuart Living for Kids have in common? They are all winners of the Elle award for best photography and design.
According to a PDN magazine article Gourmet won the award for Photography and Time won for best Photo Portfolio for James Nachtwey's "The Tragedy of Sudan." Martha Stewart Living's Kids: Fun Stuff to Do Together won its first-ever "Ellie" award, taking top honors in the Design category.
The judges praised Gourmet for its "passionate, luscious and witty" photography that is "as rich and diverse as a Chinese banquet." Gourmet's creative staff includes creative director Richard Ferretti, art director Erika Oliveira and photo editor Amy Koblenzer. The magazine won its first-ever award in the category for its October, November and December issues.
Time published Nachtwey's winning essay in its October 4 issue. "James Nachtwey's stark, dramatic images of the crisis in Darfur capture the agony of lives uprooted and destroyed by conflict," reads the official statement from the jury. "But with Nachtwey's masterly eye and bold, iconic composition, these photos go further than cataloguing what's been lost: They show the grandeur of the humanity and dignity that survive."
