The Return from PACA
I have finally returned after 16 hours of traveling to and from the southern most tip of the United States, Key West Florida. If you include time in security, layovers, and taxicabs, it is more like 22 hours. And while my trip to attend the PACA conference in Key West has yet to show it’s true reward I feel my efforts were not in vain.
The poolside meetings, parties under palm trees, and late nights with potential partners were all great but the real highlight was the PACA discussion on Microstock photography were Oleg our President, was a panelist. After a brief introduction from all panelists the floor was opened to the audience for discussion. All participants addressed topics such as price, market share, fraud/copyright infrigment, and target customers, beautifully. In review the questions seemed to stem from two major questions like How will this effect my business and What can I learn from these panelists to improve my business. It was interesting to note that all the panelists seemed to believe that the majority of their customers were very different than a traditional stock agency customer, thus suggesting an expansion of the market rather than microstock as poaching the traditional market. While at times I thought the traditional stock photography agencies might throw stones, they maintained their cool and discovered microstock was not the evil empire.
Key West was a long ways to travel and the heat and humidity was hellish however, the PACA conference was a great place to gather to meet the industry leaders. I heard someone say next years meeting was in Florence, Italy. Ciao!
