Luc Delahaye winner of Deutsche Börse Photography Prize
Paris photographer Luc Delahaye is this year Deutsche Börse Photography Prize winner of £30,000.
A short time ago Fotolia reported in an article that four photographers including one American had been short listed for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Well last week it was announced that Luc Delahaye from Paris has won the 2005 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. The winner receives a £30,000 prize and the runners up receive £3,000.
The exhibition will be from 8 April – 5 June 2005 at The Photographers' Gallery.
With generous support from the new sponsors, Deutsche Börse, the Prize continues as one of the most prominent exhibitions at The Photographers’ Gallery as well as being placed amongst the most prestigious international awards. The four short listed photographers are as follows:
- Luc Delahaye (b.1962, France)
- JH Engström(b.1969, Sweden)
- Jörg Sasse (b. 1962, Germany)
- Stephen Shore (b. 1947, USA)
The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize aims to reward a living photographer, of any nationality, who has made the most significant contribution to the medium of photography during the past year.
Deutsche Börse is the world’s largest financial exchange organization and isa major sponsor and collector of contemporary photography. Their large collection, representing 43 international artists, is on permanent display in Deutsche Börse Group’s offices. In previous years the Photography Prize at The Photographers’ Gallery was sponsored by Citigroup.

Background
Luc Delahaye has been nominated for his exhibition at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford in 2004.
Five of Delahaye’s monumental panoramas (230 x 110cm) are on display.
Their tableaux style* refers to the traditions of history painting and composition found in photographs of conflict taken in the 19th century. They show scenes from sites of contemporary wars and political power – Baghdad, Jenin refugee camp in Palestine, a mass funeral in Rwanda, the trial of Slobodan Milosevic in The Hague, and the ceremony held to elect cardinals in the Catholic Church. Delahaye presents his scenes from a neutral, detached viewpoint, and states ‘I do as little as possible… I let the viewer take control’. The resulting photographs give the viewer an opportunity to have an overview of events and situations which is often not present in the kinds of photojournalism we see in newspapers and magazines.
Delahaye started his career as a war reporter in Lebanon in 1986 and has witnessed many conflicts and human disasters around the world. Luc Delahaye was born in France in 1962 and lives in Paris.
