Zoom vs Prime

Are prime lenses really that much better than the popular zoom lenses? You just might be surprised.

Zoom or Prime Lens? For a few decades I have heard old photographers say that prime lenses are better than zoom lenses (prime lenses meaning single focal length like a 300 mm). But I am not so sure anymore.

Zoom lenses provide a certain level of convenience, allowing a photographer to go from a wide angle shot to telephoto. The also allow them to easily frame an image without even moving. The photographer is also able to carry fewer lenses. However these lenses are typically heavier than primes and can be slower (smaller maximum aperture).

Beyond the speed and weight of the lens, prime lenses provide faster focus times, brighter previews, and lower costs. In addition prime lenses force me to work for the image. I have to move around and frame the image just right. I often become more creative when I use a prime lens.

According to a popular photography magazine article about the zoom vs prime issue, zoom lenses actually tested very close to the quality of many prime lenses. Pop photo tested three brands Canon, Nikon, and Minolta. All lenses tested were high quality lenses. The primes did score higher numbers but only slightly. How can this be? The article explains that recent developments in computers and robotics have made the production of higher quality zoom lenses easier and at lower costs.

So with the minor differences I guess it becomes a question of need. Do you need an all around zoom lens? Are you looking to lighten your load with fewer lenses? Are you content with a single focal length lens? Do you need a faster fixed lens?

What ever your decision, buy the best quality lens you can afford.

Do most of you prefer a zoom or prime lens?
