Spring fling

The music of spring is so full of nature. Spring is not just about flowers blooming, butterflies and rain showers. Spring is the theme of life after the dead of winter.
So shake winter off and catch the essence of Spring! Go back in time and think of what reminds you of this season.

In my case, the mood of William Shakespeare reminds me of spring. In a humorous and lyrical way he would create and capture the essence of the spring season.

With the emotional change of the beautiful aspects of spring he would emphasize his feelings and fears. Shakespeare would imply everything we understand about the seasons of the year in our lives and the phenomena of spring.

It is the effect of what we have seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt internally that brings the SPRING season to life. So now is your turn to share with us the images of your spring memories.

And The Winner Is ...

The contributor who uploaded most images in the 3 million seconds after our image 3 million is Mrs. Ana Liza S. Steiert from Berlin with the impressive number of 3,719 images. With Ana we found a particularly typical Fotolian who perfectly reflects what Fotolia is about. She was born 1965 in the Philippines. Following a career in the hotel and catering sector she has lived and worked in Macau, New Delhi, Dubai, Cairo and Berlin. Ana’s husband Oliver is a famous chef granting her access to the knowledge and ingredients necessary for food photography. Most of her images are actual co-productions with Oliver. Ana sent us a very private and interesting letter describing her photographic career and illustrating her story with images from her private album. Ana writes:

My grandfather told me to cherish my photos, so that one day when somebody asks me where I was coming from, I only need to show my photos …

After my grandfather’s death in 1987, I left the Philippines and landed a job at the Mandarin Oriental, Macao – where I first met Oliver. In 1990, I left my job there as Training Manager to join Oliver in the Philippines. Two weeks after I arrived in BaguioCity, a strong earthquake struck, killing hundreds of people and destroying the Hyatt Terraces Hotel where Oliver was working. We survived it without any scar, and the rest is history…

Tomorrow is grandpa’s 21st death anniversary. This year Oliver and I will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary with 3 energetic children. And we stumbled on Fotolia almost exactly a year ago – while we were trying to set up our own Art Print Design website. Fotolia has a fantastic set-up for buyers and sellers. The amazing range of photos cater to different needs of a wide variety of people, from real-life snapshots to highly sophisticated ones.

Our photo technique is a mixture of experience, relationship with the subject and technology. We are using Olympus SLR digital camera with 10 million pixels, standard lens 14-42mm, angle viewfinder plus expodisc filter. Most of our photos are shot in daylight. Oliver the passionate chef in our family has over 25 years of experience.

Be my valentine

Like any tradition and superstition there are different sides of the story.
One of the stories tells that St. Valentine was a Roman who broke the law and married people in secret.
Another story tells that he was a priest that also cared for the sick. But in this story he was executed merely for his beliefs. And on the day he was to be executed (February 14) he had a visitor and gave her a note to reassure her that said "from your Valentine" -- this seems to be the origin of the tradition.
So I thought that today we could just enjoy the tradition of February; the month of LOVE. Here are some fun superstitions to try out:

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

Some people said if you found a glove on the road on Valentine's Day, your future beloved will have the other missing glove.

Some believed the first man's name you read in the paper or hear will be the name of the man you will marry.

Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seed that remain on the stem, and that is the number of children you will have.

Or, cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you can also tell how many children you will have.

Happy Valentines Day! Enjoy, have fun and get ready to meet your TRUE LOVE!

MacWorld Recap

As you may have noted in my earlier article MacWorld 2008 was a great experience for me. I met a lot of great people and saw some great products.

Before I jump into the products it was really cool to have people come up to the booth and say how much they love Fotolia. I even had one women actually start to give a demo to a crowd of people highlighting how she uses the Fotolia features. Everyone I spoke to loved the images and the website.

So I did have a chance to view a few cool products that you should be aware of. The first one is what everyone was talking about at the show. It is the new laptop from Apple called the Macbook Air. And yes it really is thin. About ¾ of an inch thin at its highest point. It has a number of cool features like:

13.3 inch display

Full keyboard – backlit

1.6 Intel Core 2 Dou

2 GB of Memory standard

80 GB hard drive

Optional 64 GB solid state hard drive

802.11n wireless card

Leopard OS

The Macbook Air is also environmental friendly using aluminum case, a mercury-free LCD, it uses less power of any Mac, and the packaging is completely made of recycled material. It starts at $1799.

Then I also saw Apples new Time Capsule. They simply combined a wireless router and external hard drive to back up every computer on the network running the Leopard OS. It comes in 500GB and 1TB of storage. Starting price is $299.

As I was walking the show floor I came upon this company called Axiotron. They make a product called Modbook that is similar to a tablet pc but much cooler since it is running the latest Leopard OS. The screen appears to be on the outside of a littl macbook and you have a very simple pen tool. The product is really geared to photographers, illustrators, and graphic designers who want that hands on feel with all their graphic work. Retails is about $2200

Last but not least I visited the Microsoft office booth. Yes I said Microsoft. They had a huge booth. They just recently launched Office 2008 for Mac. In some ways I think it is better than Office for Windows. They have so many templates and customization tools that allow you to enhance the project without destroying the original design I was blown away. So check that out as well.

I hope to return to MacWorld next year but only time will tell.

MacWorld - Enjoying the apple once again

A few months back I called a friend of mine and boldly stated “I have seen the light, I purchased a Mac”. I was so excited to do all the things "Mac people" always talked about, making movies, listening to music, building websites, and never having computer problems again.

Well I guess I was not a true convert since I still held on to my old PC ways and only dabbled in the Mac applications. My email was still on the PC and I already had so much data on my PC too. The popular Apple slogan “Think different” kept ringing in my ears every time I tried to do something on the Mac, for it was nothing like my old PC and only presented me with new challenges and often times frustration, yes it was different alright.

But last week I had a change of heart, a kind of reawaking. On my visit to MacWorld in San Francisco I must have bitten into the MacWorld Apple because I am a believer once more. I think what changed my mind was the overall display at the conference that all things can easily work together on one operating system, that hardware and operating system should be designed by the same company and that updates are opportunities for innovation and not just security fixes. I have learned that thinking different is a refining process and my growing pains are not without support from other friendly believers at the Apple store and fellow users. It is hard to explain but MacWorld opened my eyes to new possibilities with my computer.

For those of you who have also struggled with the conversion from PC to Mac please know you are not alone and there is help.
Fotolia.com - Leading source for legal, low-cost imagery becomes first microstock library with 3,000,000 images

NEW YORK, NY – January 21, 2008 – Today, Fotolia (http://www.fotolia.com) the world’s leading source for legal, low-cost imagery announces it’s 3,000,000th image, titled “Colorful balloons with ribbon isolated on white background.” The image ( ID #5858267) was submitted by Marek Kosmal, a Polish photographer whose Fotolia portfolio can be seen at http://www.fotolia.com/p/7307.
“I am delighted that I am the lucky one to upload the 3 millionth image to Fotolia. It’s a great site where you can turn your passion into hard currency.,” says Kosmal. “I have been a contributor for more than two years, and I am amazed about the development over the site – it’s updates and improvements which have created a clear and intuitive system where images are sold and purchased. Both the remuneration for photographers and the prices for buyers guarantee a lot of attention for the site, and the administration and editors are working on a very professional level, thus granting professional training for the contributors. These qualities make me a true Fotolia fan.”

Since joining Fotolia in November, 2005, Kosmal has submitted 2201 images to his Fotolia portfolio, and has licensed more than 1800 images, achieving a Silver ranking among our photographers. An amateur photographer and father of three, Kosmal uses his Fotolia income to supplement his family’s budget.

"We are thrilled to be the first microstock agency to cross the 3,000,000 image milestone,” says co-founder and president Oleg Tscheltzoff. “Fotolia has, since our launch, prided ourselves in bringing together top photographers and illustrators with a wide variety of buyers, and our amazing growth shows that our photographers find a great value in the connection we provide them.”

Since its launch in November, 2005, Fotolia has grown to offer the world’s largest library of legal, micro-priced images on the Web, offering professional and amateur photographers the ability to connect with more than 500,000 media buyers worldwide – from small businesses and design firms to some of the world’s most recognizable brands.
I have never met so many Mac guys in one place. I am of course speaking about MacWorld 2008. This is my first year at MacWorld and I am pretty impressed with all the cool toys and people.

This is a great place for Fotolia. It seems everyone is looking for images for Keynote, iweb, and all their other creative needs. When you sell royalty free images for as little as $1 like Fotolia new people start thinking how they can use more images.

So if you are here at MacWorld stop by booth S702 and say hi, we are sharing a booth with Quark. For the rest of you folks I will try to get a few pics of the new toys and post them before I leave the show.

MyFotolia has just been launched and already 1000 contributors have created a myfotolia account. Since its launch we have received a lot of great compliments, motivating us to add new features and improve the application. If you still find bugs, feel free to contact support and report them there.

So what’s new?

At first we corrected a few minor bugs but then we introduced improvements and new features. We added the magnify function allowing you to zoom in on thumbnails. We also automatically added your partner ID in the url linking back to Fotolia. This will allow you to get new Fotolia affiliates and earn more money in addition to selling your work.

What’s next?

Over the next few weeks and months ahead we will focus on more customization options for the myfotolia application, introducing new templates and tools.

Promote myfotolia

Now that Fotolia has provided you with myfotolia to promote your work we highly suggest for you to get out and spread the word. Post your links in forums, emails, and blogs just like this one. We also recommend that you add a google analytics tracker to your site in order to track your visitors.

Fotolia will soon have a myfotolia contest to elect the most beautiful and most popular myfotolia page!

The Fotolia website is growing every day. Our traffic has increased to record levels and we just added our 500,000th member to our community. As a result of this rapid growth Fotolia is in need of updating our database servers. To do this we must take the entire site offline for a few hours today. We realize this is inconvenient however we feel it is important to stay ahead of any potential site performance issues and provide the best user experience for all our members.

The Fotolia website is expected to be offline from 4 PM December 5th – 3 am December 6th EST.

Porsche Inter Auto Signs on as Fotolia’s 500,000th Member

Leading source for legal, low-cost imagery welcomes luxury car dealerships as milestone member

NEW YORK, NY – December 4, 2007 – Today, Fotolia (http://www.fotolia.com) the world’s leading source for legal, low-cost imagery welcomes its 500,000th member: Nicole Schlotterer, Head of New Media, for Porsche Inter Auto GmbH & Co KG in Salzburg, Austria.

“Porsche Inter Auto GmbH is responsible for 122 car dealerships throughout Europe representing Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti,” explains Sclotterer. “The key to our success are strong partnerships. In Fotolia we have found the perfect partner in the image sector. Fotolia gives us access 24 hours a day, 365 days per year to a broad selection of professional high quality material and this is what is important to us. We are looking forward to this partnership!”

Schlotterer manages graphic design and all electronic media for Porche Inter Auto GmbH & Co. Through this work, she is responsible for the purchase of all stock images to be used for the dealerships’ promotional materials.

"We are thrilled to announce Nicole and Porsche Inter Auto as our 500,000th member,” says co-founder and president Oleg Tscheltzoff. “Fotolia has, since our launch, prided ourselves in bringing together top photographers and illustrators with a wide variety of buyers. Our initial goal was to find a solution for small business owners to obtain legal, low-cost imagery, but since our initial launch, we’ve been fortunate enough to attract some of the world’s biggest and best brands, and they are a perfect example of the calibre of our buyers.”

Since its launch in November, 2005, Fotolia has grown to offer the world’s largest library of legal, micro-priced images on the Web, offering professional and amateur photographers the ability to connect with more than 400,000 media buyers worldwide – from small businesses and design firms to some of the world’s most recognizable brands.

About Fotolia

Fotolia is an inclusive, global community in which photographers and designers come together to form a marketplace free from traditional royalties and rights management. Launched in early November 2005, Fotolia’s digital image marketplace has acquired over 2,700,000 images in its database and 500,000 international members. Have a Happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween Fotolians,

With the end of the month approaching thoughts of ghosts, goblins, witches, super heros, princesses, and all manor of children in costumes enter my mind. As a new parent I often reflect on my adventures as a youth. My Halloween experiences are not too hard to remember. They were great times. I remember my different costumes; I’ve been a ghost, a vampire, a rock star, some Disney character, and in my older years a member of the blues brothers. I had masks, painted faces, dyed hair, and cheap plastic costumes.

It amazes me that my parents and parents nationwide on this one night of the year allowed us to dress up, wander the neighborhood after dark, and collect candy from strangers. It is as though all the house rules flew out the window on October 31st. If I tried to any of those things any other day of the year I am sure I would be grounded for a month. But October 31st was a special day. Now I was with friends and I knew most of the homes we knocked on, but still the freedom was unbelievable.

I am sure I will continue the same traditions with my children but for now my little princess, giraffe, or pumpkin (whatever custom she selects) won’t be more than 2 feet away from me and my wife.

Don’t forget that Halloween photos can be great sellers on Fotolia, so grab your cameras and snap pictures of your friends and children.

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween.
Since the launch of the API many developers have started to create these new applications, many of which will soon be released.

Fotolia is also utilizing the power of the API to create its own new products (more information to come).

We recently added new methods to the current API:

Lightbox/Galleries

We added methods to help manage and organize user galleries. You can now create/remove galleries using the Fotolia API. It is also possible to add an image to a user’s lightbox or one of his galleries. Using these new methods it is possible to create application that can manage your Fotolia galleries directly from your desktop or extranet.

User Statistics

We also expanded the method “getUserStats” with “getUserAdvancedStats” which allows you to pull user statistics during a selected period of time. All the information visible on the Stats tab of the “My files” section is now available through the API. Using this information you can create a Fotolia Stats widget through Google, Yahoo, Mac, Netvibes, Windows Vista, to view and analyze these Stats on your desktop in real-time.

Search Improvements

And last but not least we improved the “GetSearchResults function by adding a new parameter called “detail level”. When this parameter is set to 1 the API will return more information about each file for example, number of views, downloads, the creation date, or the keywords. It is a very practical tool to create a powerful search application based on the Fotolia website.

Hello Fotolians,

I just came back from the Photoshop World Conference in Las Vegas and I have been playing catch up all week. But let me tell you Photoshop World was worth the trip. I knew cool things could be done in PS but I saw stuff that blew my mind. This conference was 3 days of creativity, speed, networking, and fun. My head is full of short cuts and “oh that is what that button does” tidbits. These instructors were amazing. I guess it is hard not to have a great show when you put 3500 creative people plus teachers like Scot Kelby, Kevin Ames, Deke McClelland, and many others in one building.

The guys at the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) sure know how to teach and entertain. I hope to get to attend again next year.

Now a conference like this only happens once every year but the NAPP provides books, videos, magazines, and other exciting training seminars throughout the year. This is a great association and resource, membership is only $99 a year. Click here to learn more.

As a NAPP member you get:

Photoshop User Magazine

Access to the members-only online community

Discounts on everything from training tools to computer hardware

An Online Porfolio

Photoshop tech support

And $100 off the entrance to Photoshop World Conference

As a special deal, the NAPP is offering Fotolia members $10 off their annual membership fee. Bringing the total to $89 a year. Simply click here and enter coupon code NAPM-1UPPA upon checkout (US customers only).

Check out the NAPP home page
Check out the official Photoshop World Home page

For those of you wondering if I hit the big jackpot in Vegas…sadly I did not even have time or the desire to play. You can’t lose if you don’t play.

How to create a COOL Glass style icon:

Today, while searching for new inspirations, I came across really cool glass style icon ideas.

Give your Mac and PC a touch of color with language-agnostic icons; and place them on your desktop for your applications.

Follow these easy steps on how to create one:

1. Start by creating a square with a rounded corner radius of 20 pixels.
2. Create a second layer. This layer should be round and larger than the first layer. It will be used as the top lighting. Place it covering 1/2 of the square layer.
3. Apply the transparency effect to the round layer.

Now that we have the two basic layers, we need to create a Clipping mask:

4. Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS), position the pointer over the line dividing two layers in the Layers palette (the pointer changes to two overlapping circles Overlapping circles pointer), and click.
5. Select a layer in the Layers palette, and choose Layer > Create Clipping Mask.
6. Link the desired layers in the Layers palette. Then choose Layer > Create Clipping Mask from Linked.

The clipping mask is assigned the opacity and mode attributes of the bottom most layer in the group.

Feel free to upload your new glass icons to fotolia.com we will be happy to see your new creations.
After only 18 months, Fotolia has become the largest digital library of micro-priced stock images on the Web.

This dramatic growth can be credited to the company's international presence - with a physical presence in eight countries and support in six languages, high photographer commissions (an average of 50 percent of sales price), the ability of photographers to name their own prices – but most of all, that Fotolia photographers see high returns on their image sales.

Top Fotolia photographers see a net return of between $12 and $36 US per accepted image per year. Fotolia’s elite photographers net a revenue of between $5 and $10K US per month.

"Having a large image library is a key to maintaining a successful microstock company," explains co-founder and president Oleg Tscheltzoff. “Buyers are always searching for fresh and quality images, and with Fotolia buyers will find images and vectors they wont find anywhere else, always with the guarantee that they will find it at its best price and highest quality.”

With its V2 version release a few weeks ago, Fotolia introduced the ability to host vector files, launched a public API tool and took steps to increase server speed and reliability. Changes were made in response to both photographer and buyer feedback to continually improve user experience.

Through MOO’s ReadyMade offering, a selection of Fotolia images will be available to users with pre-designed packs.

“Since day one, Fotolia has focused on partnerships, making us the stock photography preference for many companies around the world. MOO’s unique print on demand offerings made them a logical and exciting partner,” says Oleg Tscheltzoff, co-founder and president of Fotolia, LLC. “We are happy to work with MOO to broaden their image offerings.”

Fotolia’s images were chosen to fit into four pack themes – flowers, skies, puppies and kittens. Of the selected images, users will be able to create customized MiniCards, NoteCards and StickerBooks for any occasion. Each product pack will contain between 16 and 25 image designs.

“We are pleased to announce the partnership with Fotolia because it helps MOO expand its content offering and provide consumers with more ReadyMade images to chose from,” said Richard Moross, founder and CEO of MOO. “MOO and Fotolia are both dedicated to high-quality products and captivating images, so it was natural for the companies to partner.”

ReadyMade packs were created to offer customers an alternative to uploading their own images. The packs give consumers the option to make MiniCards, NoteCards or StickerBooks from the creative, high-quality images or designs offered by ReadyMade partners and artists.

The ultimate objective

Philip Kotler once said: We will never have a second chance to create a first impression.

A common thing that I have seen happening along my marketing years; is that creative professionals are always too busy to take care of non-creative work; such as PowerPoint presentations.

Does marketing need good photography and design?

In marketing the ultimate objective is the sale of goods and services. Graphic design is the essence to give order to that information. Convert ideas to expressions. And from the marketing aspect, convert goals to sales.

Graphics have a unique ability to persuade and sell a product with the help of good photography and design. This element is applied to products as well as elements of company identity like logos, colors and text, together defined as branding.

To those still wondering or asking themselves if they should do it?
I would tell them, go for it!

Words and text need the color and strong impact of an amazing photograph. We live in a world of art and competitive marketing, so STAND OUT and get your GOAL!
