Sunrise of Robert Weingarten
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art presents Robert Weingarten, on view through July 17, 2005. Photographer Robert Weingarten has created a stunning series of images documenting the sunrise over Santa Monica Bay. All taken from the same vantage point and at the same time each morning, they reveal how radically the same landscape can vary from day to day.
Robert Weingarten has traveled widely in search of subject matter, photographing various parts of America and the world. While in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he became fascinated by the Amish and their resistance to modern life as seen in their plain black dress, horse-drawn carriages, manual tools and vernacular architecture. His black-and white photographs are a testament to this religious group’s profoundly simple life-style and faith. Over the past three years he has visited Amish communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Iowa to capture their unique culture. At a time when many people in the United States seek affirmation of family and community values.
