World's First Flexible Transmissive Plastic TFT
At the CebIT 2005 show in Hanover Germany, Samsung has introduced the first ever Transmissive Plastic LCD. According to Samsung this new display is lightweight, flexible, and very slim. The size is currently limited to 5” but they are already working on larger sizes. The era of rigid computer screens and displays has begun to end. The possibilities with such technology could be endless. This thin display may even replace the hard copy of photos. Samsung put together a very nice flash piece on their website about the product. Here are some of the details.
Samsung Electronics developed world’s first Transmissive Plastic LCD using low-temperature a-Si TFT. Transparent plastic that is more flexible, slimmer and stronger than conventional glass is adopted in the new Flexible Full Color TFT-LCD, which is the best solution for the coming ubiquitous era.
Weight and thickness of TFT-LCD is reduced by 1/3 of existing products, by thin, lightweight and flexible plastic replacing hard and rigid glass. The newly developed TFT-LCD is perfect for portable devices such as cellular phones and note PCs, creating new design possibilities for flexible and freeform Wearable Display or Fashion Display.
Plastic has thermal expansion characteristics, which call for sophisticated plastic substrate handling skills and alignment technology for each layer on the substrate in order to realize high picture resolution above 100 ppi on mid and large sized plastic substrate of 5.0” or more. Samsung developed high-resolution control technology and applied it to 5.0” Plastic TFT-LCD, realizing world’s best picture resolution (100 ppi) Plastic TFT-LCD.
Low-temperature manufacturing process for silicon TFT and color filter addresses the heat resistance problem of plastic substrate. The same element characteristics are maintained despite the low process temperature.
