Olympus EVOLT E-300

Olympus recently introduced the EVOLT E-300 digital camera into the digital SLR market. The E-300 is the second 4:3 DSLR camera offered by Olympus, the first of course is the very popular E-1. With a rugged frame and 8 mega pixel chip made by Kodak this camera is sure to gain some attention.

The design of the E-300 is not what you would call sexy but more functional. It does not look like a standard SLR with a prism on top of the view finder. The Olympus engineers came up with a side swing mirror box that eliminates the need for the prism. As a result the camera is boxier looking. Made from special aluminum the camera is light and rugged.

Dust is a major concern with digital SLR’s and Olympus designed a camera that is virtually dust free. The Kodak 8 mega pixel chip is locked in an airtight chamber covered by the Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter. When the camera is turned on this filter shakes loose any dust at 350,000 times per second. So you never have to worry about dust on the sensor again with this camera.

The E-300 comes packed with program modes 14 in all. They have one for every scene portraits, landscapes, sports, close-up, Beach and Snow, Fireworks, Sunsets, Candlelight, Landscape, Documents and more. In addition the camera still allows you to control with manual exposure mode.

To make this a world class SLR system you must have a wide range of lenses. Olympus has lenses that cover 7 mm – 300 mm (35mm equivalent to 14 – 600mm). For accurate focus, each lens features aspherical glass elements so that light strikes the image sensor from one edge to another, assuring photographs with consistent center-to-edge sharpness.

Priced at $899 with mail in rebate this camera is a great buy for anyone looking for a digital SLR system.
