Microsoft Search Tool
Disappointing Desktop Search tool from Microsoft.
Rating : 1 / 5, Comments (0)
Microsoft recently released its local search engine allowing you to search for any document via a the tool bar in your browser or inside windows task bar. Microsoft is in tough competition with Google (Desktop Search) and Apple (Spotlight) who have already released search tools earlier this year.
At first look the interface seems fully integrated with the Windows XP System. However the features they offer are not unique or original. Popup blocker, auto form fill, and local search on desktop is nothing really exciting. Since they are so late to the game you would think Microsoft would jazz up the offering.
Performance of the tool is nothing exciting either. The search and preview is slow plus the information is not categorized well. However the tool does work and is better than the default search tool in Windows XP or Outlook.
Fotolia is interested to know how well the application does with photos and metadata information. Currently the tool does not support IPTC information but you can find the EXIF information with a few clicks. Additional features and extensions can be added to the tool at http://addins.msn.com.
Overall Fotolia is very disappointed with the application. It appears Microsoft threw together a few engineers one weekend for a “me too” application. If you are looking for a desktop search tool consider Google or Apple instead.
