Creative Freedom with new Fotolia Add-in designed exclusively for Microsoft Office 2007 Applications

LONDON, UK, October 14, 2009 – Fotolia LLC, is releasing a new add-in ribbon for Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 that gives customers easy access to an enormous library of easy-to-search, high-resolution images and vectors. The Fotolia ribbon provides instant image solutions to complement personal and professional projects. The downloadable ribbon is available on www.fotolia.com/ribbon and features controls that allow users to login, view accounts and search Fotolia’s library of over 7-million high-resolution files without leaving their Microsoft Office document.

Hovering over search results lets users preview the image. A simple double click inserts a free comp of the image into the document, allowing customers to try before they buy. Once members see a photograph, vector or illustration they are interested in, they can purchase it while still in their document by selecting download and the appropriate size and license.

“Connecting Fotolia’s online image library directly to Word and PowerPoint is a great productivity win for our customers,” said Rob Ashby, Group Manager for Office.com. “The add-in’s use of the ribbon makes finding and using the right images fast and easy, without customers having to leave their work.”

Fotolia is making huge strides in the online photography and image industry. Founded in 2005 in New York City, the company quickly expanded to 12 countries and represents portfolios of some of the most respected agencies and artists. A commitment to providing high-quality, affordable images expanded the relationship with Microsoft, which offers a free collection of Fotolia images and illustrations to Microsoft Office customers through Microsoft Office 2007.

“Using the ribbon enabled Fotolia to increase the services we offer to over 1.3 million members by creating an easy, integrated experience,” says Garth Johnson, Fotolia Executive Vice President, North America. “Now, Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 users have instant in-document access to Fotolia’s library of over 7-million royalty-free images and the best licensing options in the business.”

Purchasing images from Fotolia through Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 using the add-in is easy: select the size of the image or graphic and a standard or extended license option. Only Fotolia offers standard and extended licensing with every image purchase, and the licenses are free of seat restrictions and run limits.

Once the image is downloaded into the user’s document, users are free to use the Fotolia file with no limit on time, copies or geographical placements. Images on Fotolia are truly royalty-free.

Fotolia Announces Video Competition Winners

Hello Fotolians!

We are happy to announce the results of the first video contest launched by Fotolia to greet our new contributors, video makers and digital designers, who are populating the Fotolia video collection with great video clips and footage.

The video contest was launched last May 19th. The challenge consisted to reach the maximum number of video files approved before June 20th.
This time we have 1 Algerian (first) and 2 Italian contributors (2nd and 3rd) on the Fotolia podium!

Here the winners are :
1 prize 3000 credits with 1848 accepted video clips :Yahia LOUKKAL

Yahia is a Algerian designer, that's how he comments his victory:
"I’ve been contaminated by the Fotolite (sounds like a disease in French) in October 2008 thanks to a friend. Since then, I enjoy the power of the Fotolia website and services and I am now very happy and proud to be part of this family. That’s why I don’t miss any occasion to speak about Fotolia everywhere I go. My biggest wish would be to see one day A Fotolia Algeria website.
I want to also invite all photographers, designers, video designer to join Fotolia which allows us to expose and sell our works but also to learn from other contributors who belong to this great family. I like challenges, so I have not hesitated for one second to participate with this contest . I did my best and I would like to thank my computer which worked days and nights during one month.

2nd prize of 1000 credits with 1839 accepted video clips goes to
Designer Andrea aka Andrea Di Flaviano:

Andrea,Italian from Abruzzo, the region recently hit by a heartquake catastrophe, is a 27 year old digital designer with a passion for videos. Andrea is a freelancer and has been actively producing work for Fotolia since October 2007. He is an exclusive Fotolia contributor for microstock content. Andrea, who is still under shock for the great news, tells us how she managed to have 1839 videos accepted on Fotolia in one month:
"Over the past month i have been an octopus latched on my pc, actually on 3 PC, of which one borrowed from my girlfriend who has also helped me a lot in the indexing process. I hardly went out, but for 2 family events i just could not miss. Every day from 7 AM until 2 AM i have created and uploaded videos non stop up to about 30 GigaByte in total. At night i was uploading the heaviest renders." Thank you Fotolia for this great opportunity and much love to this fantastic community that makes me grow everyday, professionally and personally!"

3rd prize of 500 credits with 1205 accepted video clips goes to BMG aka Francesco Lombardo:
Francesco is Fotolia addicted too, since October 2008. He lives in Genoa and has his own company BananaMonsterGraphic, specialized in digital arts, from creative design to video-clips productions.
Passionate about drawing, video and movies since he was a child, started his creative path when he was a teen, with urban graffiti as writer and with comics illustrations. For his works Francesco prefers open source applications: Blender for the advanced mesh modelling and professional renders, Wings, The Gimp, Photoshop, Illustrator and Inkskape.
His comments: "This video contest is the proof that nothing is impossible if you work hard at it ! I had a computer crash in the first days, and went through 10 days of desperation before the new one was delivered. I feel at home in Fotolia, this community is made of very special people and this prize is an immense achievement for me, it shows one can make his own passion into a real job. Thank you Fotolia"

Congratulations to our 3 winners and a big thank you to All who participated to this contest!

Garth Johnson Joins Fotolia

Former iStockphoto VP Business and Community Development Tapped to Head Up Rival MicrostockAgency’s Business Development Opportunities in North America

Fotolia, one of the world’s leading sources for high quality microstock imagery and video, announced the expansion of its executive team with the hire of Garth Johnson, former VP Business and Community Development of rival firm iStockphoto, as the company’s new Executive Vice President for North America. The hire comes on the heels of the announcement that former iStockphoto co-founder, Patrick Lor, has been hired to lead Fotolia's North American Operations.

“Fotolia has continued to be an innovative pioneer in the microstock space. They continue to democratize the microstock industry, keeping stock imagery affordable for small business owners, non-profit
organizations, and other groups that would otherwise not be able to afford the costs of licensing imagery associated with other companies,” says Lor, President of Fotolia, North America. “A major goal for Fotolia is the continued expansion of our offerings through strategic partnerships with businesses around the world. Garth proved his competency in our previous work together, and he will make a valuable addition to Fotolia's already talented team.”

Johnson will be responsible for overseeing business development and strategic partnership opportunities for Fotolia North America, which currently has a presence in 11 countries worldwide. He will be working with Lor and Fotolia's co-founder and CEO, Oleg Tscheltzoff, on continued expansion strategies for the company, which has nearly four million monthly unique visitors (comScore), more than six million images available for license and more than 1 million members worldwide.

“I've really admired Fotolia's strategy and innovation in the marketplace," adds Johnson, of his decision to join the Fotolia team. "They have remained true to their vision of providing the highest quality imagery to media buyers for the lowest possible cost, making it possible for small businesses to legally access stock imagery that, in many cases, is essential to the success of their business, for use in creation of brochures, advertisements, Web sites and other promotional materials. Now, more than ever, with small businesses struggling to compete, Fotolia is empowering the small and home business owner. It will be a pleasure to work with the team to ensure that more businesses have access to our image library through strategic partnerships in North America."

Johnson and Lor both joined the Fotolia team on the heels of the announcement of Fotolia's expansion into the microstock video market, which was launched on April 28.

“Fotolia has been, for years, one of the world’s most trusted sources for high-quality, low-priced, legal imagery and illustration,” explains Oleg Tscheltzoff, co-founder and president of Fotolia, LLC. “In January, we began accepting submissions for stock video clips because of an overwhelming demand from our customers, and the submissions we’ve seen in just a few short weeks – more than 10,000 accepted clips – have shown us that Fotolia is able to attract some of the best videographers from around the world to license their work through our agency.”

Fotolia’s video collection features a wide variety of content – from animation and stop motion to digital film and traditional video. Clips range in size and length from 320 X 240 to 1920 X 1080, 24 – 30 frames per second, and 5 – 60 seconds long. These clips – including HD video clips – prices are starting for as little as $10. Contributors can learn more about the offering and register to begin submitting clips by logging on to http://us.fotolia.com/Info/Contents/Videos.

Since its launch in November, 2005, Fotolia has grown to offer one of the world’s largest libraries of legal, micro-priced images on the Web, offering professional and amateur photographers the ability to connect with more than 500,000 media buyers worldwide – from small businesses and design firms to some of the world’s most recognizable brands. With the launch of its stock video offering, Fotolia continues to expand its reach into new markets, satisfying the needs of videographers and video buyers worldwide by providing high-quality, low-cost alternatives to traditional stock video offerings.

Fotolia Reaches One Million Registered Members And Five Million Images

TechCrunch, by Erick Schonfeld

Micro-stock photography is alive and well. Fotolia tells us they have just reached their one millionth registered member and now have 5 million stock images for sale, for as little as 14 cents, and typically a dollar or two. Of those one million registered members, 860,00 are active (defined as having made at least one credit card purchase or uploaded content within the past three months). Fotolia says it is registering new members at a rate of 3,000 per day (86,800 per month)

ComScore also shows some health growth, with 2.3 million unique visitors a month (the vast majority of which are obviously not registered members). Competitor iStockphoto , which was purchased by Getty Images for $50 million in 2006, has about twice as many monthly visitors (5.2 million). But on ts Website, iStockphoto says it only has 4 million images.

Another interesting stat the company shared with me: the number of uploads is very close to the number of paid downloads. People upload 40,000 images and other content every day, and download 50,000 images a day. That download rate translates to 1.5 million paid downloads a month. Fotolia takes 20 to 50 percent of the sales price.

Next up, Fotolia will begin selling stock video (something iStockphoto has been doing for a while). Fotolia already has 20,000 videos uploaded, and plans to roll out the new category generally in March or April.

Fotolia changes Exclusivity and Pricing

Dear contributor,

As we announced a few days ago, Fotolia is changing the exclusivity definitions and adding a new level of exclusivity called “Total Exclusivity”.

This change will take place as early as March 1, 2009.

Total Exclusivity Status is defined as a contributor who only offers his royalty free files (images, vectors, videos) to Fotolia. It is strictly prohibitive for a Total Exclusive member to supply their creative works on other photo agencies or microstock websites.

As compensation, Total Exclusive contributors will receive many advantages like higher exclusive commissions and the ability to increase their sales prices (see charts below).

However, the Total Exclusive Contributor will retain the rights to:

- to sell their other creative works as Rights-managed files, on their own or through a company dedicated to this activity;

- to sell their works through their personal portfolio website. In such case, the website shall not offer works for free or sell other author’s works;

- to sell their works directly to an end user in accordance with an assignment or work for hire contract;

- to sell their works directly to the end user in accordance with an editorial contract;

- to sell prints of their works;

- to print and sell derivative products, including, without limitation, posters, t-shirts, clothing, decorations and the like, whether on their own or through a dedicated website. In such case, the website must not offer works for free or sell other royalty free creative works.

Procedure

Starting today Fotolia will allow you to declare your status as a Total Exclusive contributor, and once the website has been updated you will be ready to receive the benefits as a Total Exclusive contributor.

However before updating your account we encourage you to verify that all of your royalty free files have been removed from other agencies and websites as described above to be eligible for Total Exclusivity status on Fotolia. Total exclusivity may be declared in the my profile section of your Fotolia account.

While you are free to choose we do hope you will consider becoming a Total Exclusive contributor to Fotolia and wish you much success.

Click here to modify your exclusivity options in your Profile

For additional information please reference the charts below or contact support.

Fotolia’s contributors range from amateur enthusiasts who use the site to supplement their incomes or for the chance to see their work in print or online, to professional photographers who make generous incomes as full-time microstock contributors. Fotolia has also attracted photographers from some of the world’s largest and best-reputed agencies as contributors, due to our broad variety of media buyers.
Corporations wishing to enroll in the Subscription service will be able to tie unlimited user IDs to a central account, which will make media purchases and itemisation much more efficient. Through a central account, multiple users will also be able to access a central bank of Credits for media purchases, without the need for an accounting department to monitor remaining Credits on multiple accounts.

"The Fotolia Corporate Subscription service grants customers complete control over media buying, enabling account owners to manage multiple users within a single organisation tied to a central account", explains Oleg Tscheltzoff, co-founder and president of Fotolia, LLC.
Starting an image agency with the Reseller API

New York/London, June 18th, 2008. – Fotolia, the largest online marketplace for micro-priced digital stock images, is offering a new Application Programming Interface (API), allowing a closer integration of its affiliates. Using the new Reseller API everyone can operate their own microstock agency in the country and language of their choice, selling Fotolia images under their own name.

No extensive technical capacities are necessary, as Fotolia provides the technology and the images; the resellers just sell the photographs and illustrations under their own brand name and even have the ability to determine the prices, within a certain range.

For example: A reseller decides to sell the images for a higher price ('midstock') and they keep 40% of the turnover (Contributor: 50%). Or the reseller sells for the same price as Fotolia, thereby getting a quarter of the turnover (Contributor: 50%).

„With the new API, resellers can launch their own Fotolia, so to speak. This way we can reach countries where there is still no Fotolia site“, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, President of Fotolia. Furthermore, for customers who already have a client base of their own, such as premium image agencies who may want to get into the microstock business, the Fotolia Reseller API might offer new ideas for business models.

Via an Application Programming Interface third parties can connect to the Fotolia database: Fotolia has already made Partner, Business and Developer API options available.

It is now possible when sending out press releases, to attach high resolution images purchased on the Fotolia website; all that's required, is to purchase the Extended License for that image.

Whether it's sport illustrations for a gym, or romantic holiday images for a hotel booking site – It has never been possible to transfer these images to the Editors. Until now it was only possible to provide the press with thumbnail pictures embedded in the document.

„With the Extended License image buyers can now make these pictures available to the press; therefore our numerous PR clients are able to extend their service and act even more professional and customer-friendly than before“, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, President of Fotolia.

The Extended License is currently available mainly for merchandising, such as postcards, posters, t-shirts, or website templates. Adapting the license regulations now gives an additional advantage to purchasing the Extended License over the Standard License.

Fotolia and Quark: Free XTensions Software for QuarkXPress 7

Berlin, 18th March 2008 — Quark Inc., manufacturer of prize-winning layout and design software QuarkXPress®, and Fotolia, operator of the international stock photography agency of the same name, are making - within the framework of the QuarkAlliance™ Technology Providers Program - the FotoliaXT QuarkXPress 7 XTensions® available free of charge.

With the aid of the Fotolia XTensions software, QuarkXPress 7 users will now be able to access the Fotolia community’s royalty-free images and illustrations — currently more than three million of them — straight from QuarkXPress 7, pull selected images using simple Drag&Drop, and position them into their print, Web, or interactive layouts.

Following purchase, the preview image will automatically be updated with the high-resolution image. This makes it possible to work in a fully integrated way without leaving the application, which in turn considerably speeds up the creative process.

“A lot of our clients work with QuarkXPress 7,” explains Dittmar Frohmann, CEO of Fotolia Germany. “So, the obvious thing to do is create a link between the layout and design software and our image collection. By doing this we are fitting in very well with the working habits of creative people: in this way, designers can select subjects from us without interrupting their creative workflow and carry on with the design inside QuarkXPress 7.”

Overview of Key FotoliaXT Features:
- Search, find and view first class Fotolia image material
- Store images in the Lightbox, a pre-selection tool
- Position images using Drag&Drop in print, Web or interactive QuarkXPress 7 layouts
- Automatic replacement of the preview with high-resolution images following purchase
- Uniform, global payment system using Fotolia credits within the QuarkXPress FotoliaXT palette
- Multi-lingual Web portal supporting all major languages
- Web-based application and therefore continuously up-to-date
- Possible to upload and sell own images
- Available for Windows® (Mac® version currently in preparation)

Fotolia membership and FotoliaXT download are free of charge. From as little as £ 0.57, high-quality images at different levels of quality can be purchased from Fotolia. Users who register for the first time via the Fotolia XTensions software will be given a free start-up voucher for 7 Fotolia credits during the introductory phase.

“Image piracy on the Internet will solve itself in the face of such good prices,” says Dittmar Frohmann. “Fotolia’s download terms and conditions give clear directives on originator’s and user’s rights, so that no buyer needs to worry about dissuasions for illegal use of images. We are delighted with the widespread acceptance of our licence and community models, and pleased that QuarkXPress 7 users can now make better use of these innovative opportunities.”

Using the XTensions software and QuarkXPress 7 photographers and artists can also put their own images onto Fotolia and offer them for sale. Once uploaded, the images practically do the rest of the work themselves, with Fotolia taking on the commercialization and invoicing.

“We are very pleased about the partnership with an innovative company like Fotolia,” comments Matthias Gilke, Marketing Manager Central Europe at Quark. “Not only are we delighted with the clever new functions which make it possible to research images and position image material directly into QuarkXPress 7 layouts, we are also excited by the open-minded community philosophy behind the whole system, which even lets creative artists earn money by selling their own images to other creatives.”

And The Winner Is ...

The contributor who uploaded most images in the 3 million seconds after our image 3 million is Mrs. Ana Liza S. Steiert from Berlin with the impressive number of 3,719 images. With Ana we found a particularly typical Fotolian who perfectly reflects what Fotolia is about. She was born 1965 in the Philippines. Following a career in the hotel and catering sector she has lived and worked in Macau, New Delhi, Dubai, Cairo and Berlin. Ana’s husband Oliver is a famous chef granting her access to the knowledge and ingredients necessary for food photography. Most of her images are actual co-productions with Oliver. Ana sent us a very private and interesting letter describing her photographic career and illustrating her story with images from her private album. Ana writes:

My grandfather told me to cherish my photos, so that one day when somebody asks me where I was coming from, I only need to show my photos …

After my grandfather’s death in 1987, I left the Philippines and landed a job at the Mandarin Oriental, Macao – where I first met Oliver. In 1990, I left my job there as Training Manager to join Oliver in the Philippines. Two weeks after I arrived in BaguioCity, a strong earthquake struck, killing hundreds of people and destroying the Hyatt Terraces Hotel where Oliver was working. We survived it without any scar, and the rest is history…

Tomorrow is grandpa’s 21st death anniversary. This year Oliver and I will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary with 3 energetic children. And we stumbled on Fotolia almost exactly a year ago – while we were trying to set up our own Art Print Design website. Fotolia has a fantastic set-up for buyers and sellers. The amazing range of photos cater to different needs of a wide variety of people, from real-life snapshots to highly sophisticated ones.

Our photo technique is a mixture of experience, relationship with the subject and technology. We are using Olympus SLR digital camera with 10 million pixels, standard lens 14-42mm, angle viewfinder plus expodisc filter. Most of our photos are shot in daylight. Oliver the passionate chef in our family has over 25 years of experience.

We congratulate Ana (and Oliver)who earned herself 3,000 Credits and we want to thank all other contributors who took part in this contest. You all are winners because your images will be generating sales.

With far above 14,000 images Ana Liza is one of the most industrious photographers on Fotolia. So it is no surprise that she won this contest. Check out her portfolio!
Now we have over 3 million images online, each week 40,000 new images are added, and the new registrations keep coming.

All of this is thanks to you, our 80,000 contributors. In order to celebrate this milestone, we are organizing a special contest.

3,000 Credits will be awarded to the contributor with the largest number images submitted and accepted in the next 3,000,000 seconds. This means if you want to carry home those 3,000 Credits you have about 34 days to pump those images onto our servers.

The winner of the contest and the 3,000 Fotolia Credits will be announced on this blog.

Again we thank all of our contributors for their hard work and support.

Both the remuneration for photographers and the prices for buyers guarantee a lot of attention for the site, and the administration and editors are working on a very professional level, thus granting professional training for the contributors. These qualities make me a true Fotolia fan.”

Since joining Fotolia in November, 2005, Kosmal has submitted 2,201 images to his Fotolia portfolio, and has licensed more than 1,800 images, achieving a Silver ranking among our photographers. An amateur photographer and father of three, Kosmal uses his Fotolia income to supplement his family’s budget.

"We are thrilled to be the first microstock agency to cross the 3,000,000 image milestone,” says co-founder and president Oleg Tscheltzoff. “Fotolia has, since our launch, prided ourselves in bringing together top photographers and illustrators with a wide variety of buyers, and our amazing growth shows that our photographers find a great value in the connection we provide them.”

Since its launch in November, 2005, Fotolia has grown to offer the world’s largest library of legal, micro-priced images on the Web, offering professional and amateur photographers the ability to connect with more than 500,000 media buyers worldwide – from small businesses and design firms to some of the world’s most recognizable brands.

We just launched a new service for our contributors based on the new Fotolia API. MyFotolia allows you to create and display your own private gallery in your own unique way. You decide which images and galleries will be on your MyFotolia homepage. Say you have a lot of great images of automobiles, make sure the buyer sees not just a few but all of your cool shots by putting your “Cars” gallery on your new MyFotolia and simply send the client your MyFotolia URL address. To give it that personal touch, you control all aspects of how your site will look you can, for example, upload your best image and use it as your banner so the buyer can see the quality of your work right away. You are also free to choose and change your favourite colours to suit your personality or mood. Maybe best of all a new and exciting function of MyFotolia will give you the power to arrange and rearrange the order of the images in your gallery to better catch the buyers’ eye. If you know your automobile client is looking for “Hot Rods” make sure they are the first images he sees when he opens your “Cars” gallery. Remember your client will be happy to purchase your image when he can quickly and easily find it. Your MyFotolia account is your own private collection, so you eliminate any competition, as the buyer will not be distracted by other artists content and may even choose to use a whole series of your images in one project. No need to feel bad about leaving one of your friends out in the cold though, simply create a link in your MyFotolia account so your clients and any one else can visit your friends private galleries too. Now with the obvious greater exposure you will experience you may want to keep track of exactly who has visited your site what they viewed there how many visits they have made and of course your sales! Well with MyFotolia you can do it like the professionals do by creating an account on the Google Analytics Website just click on “My Settings” in your MyFotolia home page for more details.
