Image prices now start from 9p.

Corporations wishing to enroll in the Subscription service will be able to tie unlimited user IDs to a central account, which will make media purchases and itemisation much more efficient. Through a central account, multiple users will also be able to access a central bank of Credits for media purchases, without the need for an accounting department to monitor remaining Credits on multiple accounts.

"The Fotolia Corporate Subscription service grants customers complete control over media buying, enabling account owners to manage multiple users within a single organisation tied to a central account", explains Oleg Tscheltzoff, co-founder and president of Fotolia, LLC. "This allows corporations more control over tracking microstock purchases without the need to open multiple accounts. As always, our goal is to offer solutions that meet the media buying industry's needs."

The packages offer customers ease of use, giving the administrator of the account total control over the media buying process. Features include the flexibility to download 25 to 250 images per day, automatic renewal of your Subscription, unlimited number of users, and flexible Subscription options for your organisation's needs.
Starting an image agency with the Reseller API

New York/London, June 18th, 2008. – Fotolia, the largest online marketplace for micro-priced digital stock images, is offering a new Application Programming Interface (API), allowing a closer integration of its affiliates. Using the new Reseller API everyone can operate their own microstock agency in the country and language of their choice, selling Fotolia images under their own name.

No extensive technical capacities are necessary, as Fotolia provides the technology and the images; the resellers just sell the photographs and illustrations under their own brand name and even have the ability to determine the prices, within a certain range.

For example: A reseller decides to sell the images for a higher price ('midstock') and they keep 40% of the turnover (Contributor: 50%). Or the reseller sells for the same price as Fotolia, thereby getting a quarter of the turnover (Contributor: 50%).

„With the new API, resellers can launch their own Fotolia, so to speak. This way we can reach countries where there is still no Fotolia site“, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, President of Fotolia. Furthermore, for customers who already have a client base of their own, such as premium image agencies who may want to get into the microstock business, the Fotolia Reseller API might offer new ideas for business models.

Via an Application Programming Interface third parties can connect to the Fotolia database: Fotolia has already made Partner, Business and Developer API options available.

New licenses for PR customers

New York/London, May 14th, 2008. – Fotolia, the largest online marketplace for micro-priced stock images, is improving their services for the customers in the press and public relations sector. It is now possible when sending out press releases, to attach high resolution images purchased on the Fotolia website; all that's required, is to purchase the Extended License for that image.

Whether it's sport illustrations for a gym, or romantic holiday images for a hotel booking site – It has never been possible to transfer these images to the Editors. Until now it was only possible to provide the press with thumbnail pictures embedded in the document.

„With the Extended License image buyers can now make these pictures available to the press; therefore our numerous PR clients are able to extend their service and act even more professional and customer-friendly than before“, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, President of Fotolia.

The Extended License is currently available mainly for merchandising, such as postcards, posters, t-shirts, or website templates. Adapting the license regulations now gives an additional advantage to purchasing the Extended License over the Standard License.

Fotolia and Quark: Free XTensions Software for QuarkXPress 7

Berlin, 18th March 2008 — Quark Inc., manufacturer of prize-winning layout and design software QuarkXPress®, and Fotolia, operator of the international stock photography agency of the same name, are making - within the framework of the QuarkAlliance™ Technology Providers Program - the FotoliaXT QuarkXPress 7 XTensions® available free of charge.

With the aid of the Fotolia XTensions software, QuarkXPress 7 users will now be able to access the Fotolia community’s royalty-free images and illustrations — currently more than three million of them — straight from QuarkXPress 7, pull selected images using simple Drag&Drop, and position them into their print, Web, or interactive layouts.

Following purchase, the preview image will automatically be updated with the high-resolution image. This makes it possible to work in a fully integrated way without leaving the application, which in turn considerably speeds up the creative process.

“A lot of our clients work with QuarkXPress 7,” explains Dittmar Frohmann, CEO of Fotolia Germany. “So, the obvious thing to do is create a link between the layout and design software and our image collection. By doing this we are fitting in very well with the working habits of creative people: in this way, designers can select subjects from us without interrupting their creative workflow and carry on with the design inside QuarkXPress 7.”

Overview of Key FotoliaXT Features:
- Search, find and view first class Fotolia image material
- Store images in the Lightbox, a pre-selection tool
- Position images using Drag&Drop in print, Web or interactive QuarkXPress 7 layouts
- Automatic replacement of the preview with high-resolution images following purchase
- Uniform, global payment system using Fotolia credits within the QuarkXPress FotoliaXT palette
- Multi-lingual Web portal supporting all major languages
- Web-based application and therefore continuously up-to-date
- Possible to upload and sell own images
- Available for Windows® (Mac® version currently in preparation)

Fotolia membership and FotoliaXT download are free of charge. From as little as £ 0.57, high-quality images at different levels of quality can be purchased from Fotolia. Users who register for the first time via the Fotolia XTensions software will be given a free start-up voucher for 7 Fotolia credits during the introductory phase.

“Image piracy on the Internet will solve itself in the face of such good prices,” says Dittmar Frohmann. “Fotolia’s download terms and conditions give clear directives on originator’s and user’s rights, so that no buyer needs to worry about dissuasions for illegal use of images. We are delighted with the widespread acceptance of our licence and community models, and pleased that QuarkXPress 7 users can now make better use of these innovative opportunities.”

Using the XTensions software and QuarkXPress 7 photographers and artists can also put their own images onto Fotolia and offer them for sale. Once uploaded, the images practically do the rest of the work themselves, with Fotolia taking on the commercialization and invoicing.

“We are very pleased about the partnership with an innovative company like Fotolia,” comments Matthias Gilke, Marketing Manager Central Europe at Quark. “Not only are we delighted with the clever new functions which make it possible to research images and position image material directly into QuarkXPress 7 layouts, we are also excited by the open-minded community philosophy behind the whole system, which even lets creative artists earn money by selling their own images to other creatives.”

And The Winner Is ...

The contributor who uploaded most images in the 3 million seconds after our image 3 million is Mrs. Ana Liza S. Steiert from Berlin with the impressive number of 3,719 images. With Ana we found a particularly typical Fotolian who perfectly reflects what Fotolia is about. She was born 1965 in the Philippines. Following a career in the hotel and catering sector she has lived and worked in Macau, New Delhi, Dubai, Cairo and Berlin. Ana’s husband Oliver is a famous chef granting her access to the knowledge and ingredients necessary for food photography. Most of her images are actual co-productions with Oliver. Ana sent us a very private and interesting letter describing her photographic career and illustrating her story with images from her private album. Ana writes:

My grandfather told me to cherish my photos, so that one day when somebody asks me where I was coming from, I only need to show my photos …

After my grandfather’s death in 1987, I left the Philippines and landed a job at the Mandarin Oriental, Macao – where I first met Oliver. In 1990, I left my job there as Training Manager to join Oliver in the Philippines. Two weeks after I arrived in BaguioCity, a strong earthquake struck, killing hundreds of people and destroying the Hyatt Terraces Hotel where Oliver was working. We survived it without any scar, and the rest is history…
Tomorrow is grandpa’s 21st death anniversary. This year Oliver and I will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary with 3 energetic children. And we stumbled on Fotolia almost exactly a year ago – while we were trying to set up our own Art Print Design website. Fotolia has a fantastic set-up for buyers and sellers. The amazing range of photos cater to different needs of a wide variety of people, from real-life snapshots to highly sophisticated ones.

Our photo technique is a mixture of experience, relationship with the subject and technology. We are using Olympus SLR digital camera with 10 million pixels, standard lens 14-42mm, angle viewfinder plus expodisc filter. Most of our photos are shot in daylight. Oliver the passionate chef in our family has over 25 years of experience.

We congratulate Ana (and Oliver)who earned herself 3,000 Credits and we want to thank all other contributors who took part in this contest. You all are winners because your images will be generating sales.

With far above 14,000 images Ana Liza is one of the most industrious photographers on Fotolia. So it is no surprise that she won this contest. Check out her portfolio!
The license will start at just 1 credit for a 300*400 pixel image.

3,000,000 Images Online - Time To Party

Now we have over 3 million images online, each week 40,000 new images are added, and the new registrations keep coming.

All of this is thanks to you, our 80,000 contributors. In order to celebrate this milestone, we are organizing a special contest.

3,000 Credits will be awarded to the contributor with the largest number images submitted and accepted in the next 3,000,000 seconds. This means if you want to carry home those 3,000 Credits you have about 34 days to pump those images onto our servers.

The winner of the contest and the 3,000 Fotolia Credits will be announced on this blog.

Again we thank all of our contributors for their hard work and support.

It’s a great site where you can turn your passion into hard currency,” says Kosmal.

“I have been a contributor for more than two years, and I am amazed about the development over the site – it’s updates and improvements which have created a clear and intuitive system where images are sold and purchased. Both the remuneration for photographers and the prices for buyers guarantee a lot of attention for the site, and the administration and editors are working on a very professional level, thus granting professional training for the contributors. These qualities make me a true Fotolia fan.”

Since joining Fotolia in November, 2005, Kosmal has submitted 2,201 images to his Fotolia portfolio, and has licensed more than 1,800 images, achieving a Silver ranking among our photographers. An amateur photographer and father of three, Kosmal uses his Fotolia income to supplement his family’s budget.

"We are thrilled to be the first microstock agency to cross the 3,000,000 image milestone,” says co-founder and president Oleg Tscheltzoff. “Fotolia has, since our launch, prided ourselves in bringing together top photographers and illustrators with a wide variety of buyers, and our amazing growth shows that our photographers find a great value in the connection we provide them.”

Since its launch in November, 2005, Fotolia has grown to offer the world’s largest library of legal, micro-priced images on the Web, offering professional and amateur photographers the ability to connect with more than 500,000 media buyers worldwide – from small businesses and design firms to some of the world’s most recognizable brands.

MyFotolia allows you to create and display your own private gallery in your own unique way. You decide which images and galleries will be on your MyFotolia homepage. Say you have a lot of great images of automobiles, make sure the buyer sees not just a few but all of your cool shots by putting your “Cars” gallery on your new MyFotolia and simply send the client your MyFotolia URL address. To give it that personal touch, you control all aspects of how your site will look you can, for example, upload your best image and use it as your banner so the buyer can see the quality of your work right away. You are also free to choose and change your favourite colours to suit your personality or mood. Maybe best of all a new and exciting function of MyFotolia will give you the power to arrange and rearrange the order of the images in your gallery to better catch the buyers’ eye. If you know your automobile client is looking for “Hot Rods” make sure they are the first images he sees when he opens your “Cars” gallery. Remember your client will be happy to purchase your image when he can quickly and easily find it. Your MyFotolia account is your own private collection, so you eliminate any competition, as the buyer will not be distracted by other artists content and may even choose to use a whole series of your images in one project. No need to feel bad about leaving one of your friends out in the cold though, simply create a link in your MyFotolia account so your clients and any one else can visit your friends private galleries too. Now with the obvious greater exposure you will experience you may want to keep track of exactly who has visited your site what they viewed there how many visits they have made and of course your sales!
Fotolia launches Infinite Collection

New York/London, December 2007. – Fotolia, the world’s leading source for legal, low-cost imagery, launches it's 'Infinite Collection', which consists of over 15,000 pictures provided by premium international image agencies. It is now possible, with immediate effect, for other agencies to offer their images via the Fotolia website.

Fotolia´s revolutionary approach has called the high price policies of conventional stock image agencies into question. The new 'Inifinite Collection' makes those high quality images affordable, so Fotolia customers no longer have to rely on conventional, costly providers to purchase them.

Only at Fotolia are these exquisite images available at such a low price, with prices of the 'Infinite Collection' ranging between £8.55 and £59.85, depending on the size and resolution.

„We have seen tremendous growth in the last two years, in our image library and our photographer and buyer community“, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, President of Fotolia. "The new collection will give Fotolia the ability to further expand our offerings to media buyers through these top partnerships. The agencies partnering with Fotolia for our 'Infinite Collection' will have the unique opportunity to be exposed to hundreds of thousands of buyers globally, every day”.

The 'Infinite Collection' is the first traditional stock collection with a microstock agency. Once keywords have been entered into the search bar on the Fotolia site, the images can be recognised by their black border. Additionally, it is also possible to filter the search to just find images within the 'Infinite Collection'.

We strive to guarantee that we are always improving our site and its functions and no matter how many members we have they all enjoy that same quick and easy service provided.
To that standard we are constantly upgrading our site and its functions and tonight we will be adding a new server to our database,in response to the growing number of members and traffic on the site. This will help to significantly reduce the time needed to find images as well as increase the accuracy of the searches. To perform this upgrade we will have to take all servers offline for a short period of time starting tonight December 5th at 9:00pm. So if you have some images to buy better plan ahead and do it today. Likewise if you have images you wish to upload today, mind the time. The blog will remain accessible through the night for those of you who need your fix. The site and all its functions old and new will be back online tomorrow morning the 6th of December at 8:00am.
We apologise for any inconvenience but growth means change and change requires time.

Fotolia For Dummies Part 2

So your membership application has been thoroughly checked by our staff to make sure you have met all the requirements, don’t worry we are not the M.O.D. but we do take this very seriously. You have now received your validation e-mail, accepted your membership and you are ready for the good stuff, finding and purchasing your images. First things first, how do I find the perfect image? Here at Fotolia we have developed a quick and easy search function to make this process as painless as possible. It is comprised of four specially designed areas:
Search, Detail Search, Category Search, and Gallery Search.

Search:
At the top of your member page you will find a Search box where you put in the word that best describes the image you need.
For example:
If you are working on a campaign for a Fitness Centre you may want to enter the words fitness and centre, you could also put in words that describe a Fitness centre like gym, or spa or even health. You will then be able to view the most compatible images in our database pertaining to Fitness Centre.
As you can imagine with the number of images available on Fotoloia you could have your eyes full so we have come up with ways to help you narrow your search to only images that suit your specific needs.
Detail Search:
To the right of the Search box you will see Detail Search by clicking on this you can search specifically for images by:
Relevance:
Most relevant to your keyword choice
Price: Find only the images listed at the price you want.
Date: Orders images by date of upload, list images in numerical order for easy to find image numbers.
Views: Shows the number of times the image has been viewed.
By clicking the appropriate boxes beneath you can choose to see only Photos, Illustration, or Vector. If you know you want to use a real photograph for the Fitness brochure you can eliminate any illustrations or vectors from your search. Like wise if you want to find a funny illustration of someone trying to get fit, with the red cheeks and sweat pouring off, to use in a pamphlet for the Gym you can look for only illustrations.
You save a lot of time if you remove images you know you wont use from your search. The Detail search will also appear on the left hand side of the screen and can be used along with all other Search functions
Category Search:
The Representative Category: Is what it sounds like, topics which directly represent the thing you are looking for. Images that would suit a project for a fitness centre are more likely to be found in the representative sub-category Health or even Leisure where the images such as someone running, eating healthy or even relaxing in the hot tub represent aspects of a fitness centre.
The Conceptual Category: Use your imagination for this one. An image of someone lifting weights with bulging arms could also be a good metaphor for the strong foundation your company has built. In the same way a picture of a Buddhist monk meditating is a good concept to advertise your relaxation spa. In the Conceptual category, your mind is the only limit.Again you can use the Detail Search in conjunction with your Category Search.
Gallery Search:
Members have created many different Galleries on the site in which all the images pertain to one subject. Say for example you need an image of someone running in the gym click on Gallery Search and look for a gallery devoted to fitness or even running if you find one, and all of the images in that Gallery will have something to do with fitness health or running.
As you can see there are so many ways for you to help yourself find the perfect images quickly and easily, that you may even find time to enjoy the spa, or gym, or fitness centre for yourself!!

News about the Fotolia API

Two months ago we released the Fotolia API. The API is a programming developer interface making it possible to create widgets, applications or websites in relation with the Fotolia website. A lot of developers and partners are developing new applications using the API. These applications will soon be released and we will keep you posted. Fotolia itself is using It’s own API to create new products (you will learn about it very very soon).

We added new methods to the existing API :

Lightbox/Galeries

We have added methods to manage user galleries. You can now create/remove galleries using the API. It is also possible to add an image to a user’s Lightbox or to one of his galleries. Thanks to this method, an online printer can create a special gallery of images best suited to their customer, for example:
Sunset, Cars, Babes, Babes on Cars, Cars at sunset Another new method will now make it easy to create an application enabling you to manage your Fotolia galleries directly from your desktop or your extranet.

User Statistics

Along with the existing method "GetUserStats" we are now offering "GetUserAdvancedStats" which allows you to see detailed statistics about a user. What was once only available online in the “Statistics” tab of your Member Area is now available in real time on your desktop through the API.
For example it is now possible for a photographer to create a widget, say a Google Sidebar, to get their Fotolia sales Statistics in real time. This would be possible with Yahoo,Mac,Netvibes,Windows Vista as well.

Search Improvements

We have improved the GetSearchResults function by adding the new parameter "detail level". When this parameter is set to 1 the API will return more information about each image for example:
Number of views, number of downloads creation date or the keyword.
Practical use:
A developer invents a plugin for Photoshop, Freehand or Quarkxpress that allows him to download an image from Fotolia direct to his software. With our new method all the easy to use Fotolia functions are available directly to your software, making it possible for a Graphic designer to search purchase and download an image without ever leaving the program. It is very practical if you want to create a powerful search application based on Fotolia

Fotolia For Dummies

Hi Folks,
I have been taking lots of calls from people who are just discovering Fotolia and are eager to join the family. Seeing as I am new here also I have had the opportunity over the last few weeks to make my way through the process. So here it is Fotolia for Dummies, (or for those of you on the sensitive side Fotolia for beginners.

STEP ONE: Sign Up.

So you have found Fotolia through friends, magazine ad, or just by luck and you can´t wait to join, but what to do? When you are on the member page on the left hand side you see “sign up for free account”, click on it and you will go to the sign up page where you can set up your profile. Fill in the boxes, at the top of the screen, keep in mind you want to use a login name and password that will be easy for you to remember. You can change your password but your login is forever so choose wisely. Please read and follow the instructions beside the login and password boxes. When you are finished with your login and password take a moment to read our terms and conditions carefully then click on the accept terms box at the bottom of the page. This will take you to step two of the process. Here you will fill out your “Personal information “. The information given on this page is very important so do not skip any of the boxes. We require that you give your real and full name no exceptions to this rule in any case. When you have told us who you are we then need the e-mail address you want to use for your Fotolia account. Since we are dealing with legal contracts and licenses, and all contact with you will be made through this address, please double check that you have the correct one. To have your free account validated as fast as possible make sure that you fill in all questions on this page which are marked with a star. Your actual address street name and number along with the country you live in must be filled in correctly, or there could be a delay, meaning you would have to wait to upload your images for free on our database, or to purchase the image you need. If you are shy or just have a cool nickname you can put it in the alias box and all Fotolia customers will see that name when they view your files. A catchy name may stick in a persons head, so they will always know how to find your images on the data base so try to choose an alias that will attract customers.
Lastly if you would be so kind as to tell us where you heard of Fotolia if your answer is “other” we would appreciate it if you could give us the details.I know this seems simple but you would be surprised how many people have to wait for their account to be validated because they have overlooked one or more of these instructions. Once you have completed the sign up form in full and double checked all your answers click on submit and you are a member. You can now start uploading your images for free or purchase images from the database starting at 57 Pence per image.
Your free account will stay that way as long as you are a member, there are no hidden or membership dues ever. So to review, make sure you have filled in all the marked boxes with the correct and authentic names, email address, and your home address. Following these instructions properly will allow you to spend more time concentrating on your work and less time waiting for an answer from the support team. So welcome to Fotolia and stay tuned for more Fotolia for Dummies coming soon!!

Fotolia New Version : What changed ?

We are very pleased to announce the new version of Fotolia. We have been working on this new version for about one year. If you think that this new version looks pretty the same, it is because we didn’t really focus on design (which is still pretty good ) but we totally rebuild the website core. We keep the former website organization and features and we changed the rest. Fotolia had been entirely recoded to reach new horizons. Opening, scalability and performances have been the basis of the new architecture.

This new version was long to come but we have now tools to make Fotolia become a major actor in the stock image industry. The next weeks will come with important announcements and new features.
Many improvements and changes have been done. You will discover them while browsing Fotolia. In the following line we will focus on some important improvement which could affect the way you use Fotolia.

Performance : Speed and Stability enhancement

Fotolia numbers slightly increased during the last year. Millions of people visited Fotolia per month and thousands of images are uploaded and download each day. We were aware that these sudden increase of traffic had bad consequences on site stability and speed. Priority number one has been give to performance in this new version. The structure has been completely rebuilt to offer you the last technologies and the better performance in term of stability, speed and usability. If performances have been improved everywhere, search has been particularly worked out. The search function has been enhanced to be more accurate, quicker and more comfortable to use.
The new server architecture has been chosen to support millions of new visitors and content without speed or stability loss. In addition to technical improvement, the new version is prepared for internationalization with respect of global standards and implementation of new language functionalities in order to continue our international expansion.

Fotolia Service : API

From the beginning of Fotolia we always focused on making partnerships and proposing solutions to make Fotolia exist not only trough fotolia website. Fotolia is the stock photography reference for many partners all over the world. This new version was for us the opportunity to reach the next step and to rebuild Fotolia to make it more connectable and open to outside. We implement an API (Application Programming Interface) to make possible for partner to integrate Fotolia in their application or products. Tens of partners (printers, portal and blog platform) are already in the starting block to integrate the Fotolia API in their services. In addition to that, the API is proposed to developer to build applications intended to improve fotolia experience (plugin, add-on, widget etc.). Lot of news to come about the API in the next few weeks.

More information about API >>

Fotolia Accepts Vectors

One of the priorities for the new version was to be able to handle new graphic format in addition to existing one in order to fit new industry and creative needs. The new core is able to support new graphic formats. The first to be introduced is vector. It is now possible to buy and sell SVG vector to Fotolia. SVG is an open standards for vectors which is expanding a lot thanks to mobile and web industry. The uploading process is very simple, you just have to submit SVG file which will be handled by the system, no need to attach any thumbnail or upload any ZIP file. Vectors are very useful since they are graphic arts which could be resized without any quality loss. SVG is ( Scalable Vector Graphic) is the only accepted format for uploads, vector download will be possible in EPS or SVG. New creative content will soon be accepted for sale and purchase trough Fotolia.

More information about vectors >>

Galleries & Folders

As you might know galleries are categories which could be created in your lightbox. Galleries are used a lot by members to organize contents within the fotolia website. Galleries manager has been improved using some Ajax features to optimize galleries creation and management. For example, you will now be able to order images within galleries. On the same scheme, we also implemented a category system within the upload image panel so that contributors could also organize their contents. Thanks to this new organization, bulk changes will soon be possible on a folder.

Editing Process

Editing process has been slightly simplified and optimized. Categories are now optional ( even it is highly recommended) and keywording system has been changed. In order to avoid spelling mistakes, words which are not recognized by our dictionaries are colored in red. You can then decide if you would like to change/remove the word or leave like that because it correspond to proper name or not in dictionary word. Don’t forget to rank your word by pertinence; first keywords have to be the most pertinent for your images. In addition to that we also give you the possibility to manage your model released in an independent section. Under “My Files > Model released” you can know add, view, edit or delete existing and new model releases.

Miscellaneous

In addition to the features described above many other changes have been done and new features introduced like for example:

Flash Upload System:we replace the old upload java application by a brand new flash upload system which allows cool bulk uploads for those who don’t want to hear of FTP.

Zip File Download : What a pain when you buy 30 images and you have to download them individually. It is now possible to download all images in a zip file by just one click.

New License Introduction : we introduced a small size license perfect for web usage. It is called the S standard license and available for all files.
The V2 will be online today in the afternoon for Fotolia Europe and tomorrow morning for our American Fotolians. We think this is the right time to publish the result of the V2 logo contest. It was a very hard to make a decision since we have received more than 300 logos from over 150 members.

Important aspects for our decision were: respect of technical requirements (size, format, color); aesthetical (beauty, finesse) and correspondence with V2 spirit. We have received very good contributions even we were some times disapointed to get really good logos with bad colors and bad sizes which we had to decline.

Once again the award goes to France. We are very pleased to announce that Julien Eichinger is the winner of the Fotolia V2 logo contest. He will receive 200 credits on his account and his logo will be displayed on the Fotolia website for one week from the launch of the V2 this afternoon. Julien has proposed a set of logos which are very interesting and we have picked the best one.

You can have a look at a part of the logos we received below!

Fotolia Accepts Vectors

Adding to Fotolia’s popular collection of bitmap images (jpeg photography), Fotolia now supports vector illustrations. Vector graphics use geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and polygons to represent images. One main advantages of this kind of graphic is that Vectors are made from a series of mathematical curves that will print sharply even when resized.

Vectors are becoming a popular file format for use in a variety of fields, from printing, web design and mobile phones, with major advantages. For example, a logo created with a vector graphic can be printed on a business card and then enlarged to billboard size while maintaining sharp resolution and high image quality, offering versatility for printing professionals.

For use with mobile phones, vector images can be resized to fit any phone screen without quality loss. Additionally, vectors are becoming the format of choice with web designers over rasterized images. . New web browsers support a vector format (SCG), which makes it possible for web editors to integrate images that are interactive and can be modified without quality loss. In addition to these specific uses, vectors can be converted into images and be integrated in any kind of print and digital document as any other graphic.

Buying vectors on Fotolia

Vectors files are now available on the Fotolia website while searching for images. Vectors are offered in two formats (EPS and SVG) and one size, since you can dictate the size you want without quality loss. Most vector and image editing programs are able to open and edit these formats. Prices for vector illustrations start at 5 credits and extended licenses may be available if the author chooses.

Selling Vectors on Fotolia

It is very easy to submit and sell vectors on Fotolia. The process is exactly the same as uploading a JPEG file. Simply select the upload method that best works for you (simple upload, JAVA upload, or FTP) drag and drop or submit the file and our website will do the rest with your Vector file. There is no need to attach a zip or thumbnail, just send us your SVG file and everything else will be taken care of.

Requirement : ONLY SVG files are accepted. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) is an open standard for vector graphics created by the World Wide Web Consortium. Most vector editing programs export vectors into SVG format including Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape and Coreldraw.

More on SVG
Wikipedia
http://www.svg.org/

Vectors have their own price structure, similar to the price structure for still JPEG images. For more information on vector prices please review the information on the pricing page.

Fotolia Extends The License System: Smaller RF License introduced

After last week's announcement of price changes we decided to further optimize the license and price structure by introducing a new standard RF license.

This license is smaller than the existing M standard and hence called: "S Standard RF License". This license, specifically targeted for web usage, will offer images at 600 x 800 pixels (0.48 MP) thus exceeding the maximum allowed display size for electronic applications. So both sides should be happy with this innovation: Contributors are increasing their income by earning more money for the same file sold and potential buyers enjoy a wider selection to suit their requirements. This implies another change or rather non-change: The Credit price (1 Credit = GBP 0.57) remains the same. By this smart move no-one will be troubled with complicated conversions (old credits / new credits) and it enables us to a faster release of our V2. The new price and license structure reads as follows:

Exclusive Images

Non Exclusive Images

V2 coming soon: Prices and other changes

You’ve heard us talk about some big changes coming for quite some time. Well it is finally happening. Version 2 or commonly called by insiders V2 will start to be released in just a few days. At the end of this week, Fotolia will be closed for approximately 12 hours to move our servers and release the new version of the website. No major visual changes have been made from a design point of view, however the entire website has been recoded to improve performances and prepare Fotolia for the future. We are also using this release as an opportunity to introduce changes in the pricing structure. The pricing changes will help simplify purchases and keep Fotolia competitive in the marketplace.

Exclusive Buy Out License

Due to fraud issues and declining buyer interest, we have removed the Exclusive Buyout licenses. New licensing models will be introduced soon

Credit Value

We finally feel it is time to raise our prices however it will not be a drastic change. 1 credit will now cost £0.68 . This value is more accurate and equal to our other international countries who use the Euro as a basis of payment. This should be good news for photographers who will now see a 30% increase in commissions overnight.

Data Base Clean Up

It is time for us to clean the database. Since the beginning of Fotolia, the quality of images has really increased. We have received millions of images and it is now the time to clean the database and give a chance to new images that sell as good as the oldest ones. Quality is and always will be the key to attract good buyers. After the launch of V2, images with no sales for 18 consecutive months will be removed from the Fotolia database.

Prices Changes

To simplify and improve the efficiency of the customer experience we have developed a new pricing system in V2. This new pricing model will bring in more customers and thus more commissions for all photographers.

New Version

The Fotolia team is very excited about the V2 release. We have totally rebuilt the core code and infrastructure of the Fotolia website however maintaining pretty much the same design. V2 will increase stability, performance, and allow for new future opportunities. Searching, editing, and uploading have all been optimized to increase speed, accuracy, and performance. Some of the new features will include Vector support (SVG Files), image folder organization, and a flash upload system. Additional details will be published immediately following the V2 release to more fully describe the new features.
As V2 will not look too different in terms of design (we focus on performance and we actually do like the current design :) ) we count on our dear contributors to give it a different look. So once again your design skills are requested to create a new logo for the Fotolia start page. Since it is V2 we have doubled the usual prize and the winner of the contest is going to receive 200 credits!

The contest is open to all Fotolia members. So roll up your sleeves, take a big sip from the creativity bottle and create a logo according to these technical specifications.

The first two logo design competitions resulted in French victories. Now as far as we can remember Britain is supposed to have the best designers … so please assist us to put this right and enter the competition.

How to enter

The Relationship Between Fotolia The Agency And The Client

We receive calls from graphic designers, webdesigners, advertising and communication agencies daily inquiring as to whether a Fotolia picture may be “sold on” to their clients. The re-selling of Fotolia images is in fact contractually forbidden, however most callers actually mean something quite different. Agencies are namely our main clients and can very well use the images for their clients.

The exact legal setup depends on the respective business relationship with the client. There are two fundamental combinations.

1. The client purchases the picture and the GWA uses this image in their role as “fulfillment service”. The usage rights to the picture rest with the client. The advantage for the client – they can use the picture for future purposes.

2. The GWA buys the image, building it for example into a website and then sells the rights to the site (containing the picture) to the client. The advantage for the GWA – if the client wishes later to use the picture for other purposes, they must either commission the job with the GWA or buy the license from us themselves. In the rare case of a different customer wanting to use the same image, a new license should be acquired.

Keywords

After uploading an image you need to describe it using a set of at least seven suitable KEYWORDS. The keywording process is at least as important as the actual creation of the image because only those pictures with sufficient and exact keywords will be found and eventually bought by a potential buyer. We can’t mention often enough the importance of well selected keywords. Even the best image won’t sell if nobody can find it. By using effective keywords you can even add a conceptual dimension to your images. So all we are saying is that it really pays to take a bit of time and concentration for this procedure.

Keyword Order
Our search engine takes into account the keyword order. So the first keyword should describe the most important element of the image. The second keyword should embody the next important element and so on. You can type your keywords either one at a time or separated by <<,>> or <<;>> into the left window and press the <<add>> button to move them to the right window. To change the order of keywords simply click on the relevant word and shift it with the buttons <<up>> and <<down>> or <<move to top>> to the desired position.

Finding the „Right“ Words
As a photographer or illustrator you should try to think like a buyer. What words would he or she use when searching an image of a light bulb? Imagine this scenario: Sunday morning 2 pm. A tired graphic designer searches a photo for the design of a brochure for a nervous customer. In which way and for what reason would he/she look for an image of a light bulb?

•	Plain. An image of a light bulb is required. The customer will search using words such as light bulb; light; spot
•	Context. An image showing light or brightness is required. The customer would search for light; illumination; bright
•	Concept. A light bulb also might be used to illustrate more abstract concepts such as creativity or ingenuity. The designer would use the keywords idea; imagination; invention

Another strategy is the description from the inside to the outside. You first describe the “most” important element of the image with several synonyms. Then you move to the “less” important details, i.e.: light bulb; light, lighting, bright; glare; shine; ceiling; shadow, ambience.

Please bear in mind that the keywords can not be changed once they are submitted.

Keyword Format
Most customers are using search terms in specific formats. It is advisable to stick to certain formats.
•	Use nouns, verbs and adjectives: light bulb, shine, bright
•	Use singular not plural: light bulb, not light bulbs
•	Use verbs in infinitive form: shine, not shining
•	Watch out for misspellings
•	Avoid abbreviations and slang

Finally we must stress it one more time: Keywording might not be everybody’s favourite activity and most photographers prefer a good shooting session. But spending sufficient time and thought on the right choice of keywords will raise the commercial success and value of an artist’s portfolio. Or did we already mention that?
