Which License Do I Need to Use The Photos?

Here is a list of some specific typical uses of photos and which license you'd need to buy. There are many ways to use Fotolia's Royalty Free Stock Photos and below is not a complete list as there will always be something new somebody finds to use the royalty free images for.

The Licence Overview is great for most people, but with the price of photos coming down people are now buying images for the first time and are confused about which licence they need to buy.

Sometimes your use of the image might be slightly different to the norm, or you may be unfamiliar with buying royalty free stock photos and can't believe how affordable photos can be with Fotolia.

Check out the License Overview Chart first: Royalty Free License Overview

And the Extended License here: Extended License

Think of the license when you buy an image is similar to when you buy a video/DVD. You'd buy a different license if you wanted to play it at home, to if you owned a cinema and wanted to sell tickets at your cinema for putting the show on!

The main difference between the Fotolia Standard License and the Fotolia Extended Licences is that the Standard License allows you to use the image repeatedly in your printed and online marketing materials (flyers, brochures, adverts, leaflets etc), whereas the Extended License is what you need if you plan to re-sell the image in some way (print it onto mugs, T shirts, posters, canvas prints).

The two main areas where this is mostly likely to need clarifying is when a printer or a designer are buying images on behalf of a client, or if somebody publishing a book or CD wants to use an image for their cover.

Below is a comprehensive list of which licence is required for many situations, just to help. If there is nothing like what you are trying to do listed, get in touch with support and we can advise and then we will update this list if necessary.

With the Extended License there is no difference between the image being used on one product or thousands of them. The license covers the fact that the image is being used for commercial use.

The standard license is for when you are marketing your own company.

I hope you find this list helpful.
