New Printers from Epson and HP

With the recent end of PMA 2005, 3 new digital printers were announced aimed at photo enthusiasts and professionals. Epson continues it hold on to the professional and photo enthusiast market but HP has developed two new eye catching photo printers for the serious amateur and pro market.

Epson
The long awaited successor to the Epson 2200 was not announced at this PMA and is not expected to launch before the holidays. But Epson did announce the R1800 photo printer which prints up to 13x44 inchs. They claim it can print an 11x14 in 111 seconds but we will wait for the final results. Retail price was announced at $550. New shipments will begin in late March.

HP
HP announced two impressive new photo printers. The HP Photosmart 8750 and the HP Designjet 90.

The Photosmart 8750 is the first real photo enthusiast printer for HP. This printer features a maximum print size of 13 x 19 inches, and 9 dye inks (including 2 photo grays) inside. Priced at $500 Epson may need to watch their back.

The HP Designjet 90 is HP’s low end pro printer. It features 6 individual ink tanks, and easily creates 18x24 prints or smaller. This printer is not designed for the average home desk but is not a true large format printer either. Priced at $995 it is perfect for any pro photographer or designer who needs large prints and the economy of individual ink tanks but unwilling to jump to the pricey large format printers.

Shipments will begin for both HP printers in late spring early summer.
